So far so good

Outside temperature 34 degrees F. 0.5 L water at 34 degrees F., in an MSR Pika Teapot. There was a light breeze, 1-2 mph. I filled the converter stove to the top with Roundfire Premium ethanol. It took 15 minutes and 30 seconds to heat the water to a full boil. I think that is excellent performance for a stove with a windscreen that doesn't fall over or move in the wind, and that can be used with wood as well, with the combination weighing only about 6 ounces. The stove continued to burn another 5 minutes.

I tried the converter stove this morning at 37 degrees F. and 10-15 mph wind with higher gusts. I wanted to test the windscreen function of the hexagon stove compared with a Trangia 27-1 alcohol stove set. I measured 500 ml of water with the Vargo 1L Bot for each. I used Roundfire Premium bioethanol (high percentage ethanol, denatured) for each. I filled the converter stove to the top, and the Trangia burner 2/3 full. I used the winter preheater on the Trangia burner. The converter stove lit and burned well in the wind, but went out at around 5 minutes and appeared to be dry. It cooled quickly so I refilled it, and at around 5 minutes it went out again, apparently dry, without the water boiling. At the same time (same wind conditions) the Trangia came to a full boil just short of 9 minutes, with a fair amount of alcohol unburned. I inverted the converter stove and filled the recess with FireDragon alcohol gel. It lit fine, but the wind blew it out in a couple minutes, leaving unburned gel which was messy to clean. I also set up the Vargo windscreen around the converter stove, but didn't continue since the windscreen wouldn't stay in place. The water in the Bot on the converter stove never got more than somewhat warm as far as I could tell without risking a burn. The stoves were designed for different purposes, but I didn't want to rule out the extremely light weight and compact hexagon and converter stove combination without testing them. The inverted Bot lid blew off a couple times and the Trangia skillet-lid blew off once. I'll test the converter stove with less wind on the next try.

My 3rd one,.

I like them all,
each one has its pros no cons...
truly all are excellent,

would love to see a version
that contains the alcohol like
the spirit burners,

would proudly wear it if
it came with a hook of some kind,
something that could clip to
my belt or waist as opposed
to back pocket.

i some times use a hard rubber
that fits inside the hole,
it allows me to keep the
alcohol inside,

I look forward to Vargo,s next
generation stoves.
am betting it will be a bit
of burner,stove,fuel container,
pot holder,wind deflector,all
in one perfect as expected...

one thing is a given,

it will work good,
and also look good,
its self evident

next Gen,
will it be round,square,or
flat,or will it have its own battery lol,
maybe foldable,maybe be 3D,or
2 or 3 in one,
either way i cant wait...

Touche Vargo touche !!!

The converter stover is great, although the small size means the fuel burns out quickly. I have no issues priming the converter with a small bottle cap primer or with a butane jet lighter.
I am yet to test it with sticks and look forward to that in months to come.
I’m very happy with the Vargo products.
Thank you.

I have been using the original stove and the woodstove. I tried to use the woodstove mainly as a windshield, with limited success. When I heard about the Converter (and the large-hole redesign) I got pretty excited and ordered one. It arrived in Vancouver in less than a week. I had some trouble finding fuel until I went to a chandlery (Heet seems to have disappeared in Canada). Incidentally I did some testing and found that ethanol burned MUCH hotter than methanol. A cup reached boiling in 8 minutes rather than 10, and the burn also lasted several minutes longer. Ethanol is worth the extra cost IMHO.

Used it at 10,000+ ft. And it gets the job done. Used it with the wood stove in breeze conditions at hi elevation with no problem. Overall when combined with the wood stove you can go a long way without carrying a lot of fuel. I like it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

From Brian Vargo - A lot of customers were using the Hexagon Wood Stove as a windscreen for alcohol stoves.  This is a good use of the Hexagon but the distance between the bottom of a pot to the top of a stove sitting at the bottom of the Hexagon was too far for optimal performance. Excessive distance creates soot to form on the bottom of a pot and fuel does not burn efficiently. I wanted to improve upon this and created the Converter stove to “convert” the Hexagon into a cooking system that is efficient and eliminates the creation of soot.

The Converter Stove enhances the performance of the Hexagon Wood Stove in several ways:

Fuel Versatility: The Converter Stove transforms the Hexagon Wood Stove into a complete multi-fuel system. It allows users to burn not only wood but also other fuels like alcohol, fuel tabs, and fuel gels. This versatility is particularly advantageous in various outdoor settings where different fuel types may be more readily available or convenient.

Optimal Cooking Efficiency: The "drop-in" design of the Converter Stove creates a stable and controlled environment within the Hexagon Wood Stove. This optimal setup ensures that the distance between the stove and cookpot is ideal for efficient cooking. As a result, users can expect improved cooking performance, faster cooking times, and better overall efficiency when using an alcohol / fuel tab stove within the Hexagon.

Cleaner Cooking Experience: One notable feature is that the Converter Stove is designed to prevent soot buildup on the bottom of cooking pots. When the distance between the top of an alcohol stove and the bottom of a cooking pot is incorrect, soot can form.  The Converter Stove addresses this providing a cleaner cooking experience. Users can enjoy the convenience of a multi-fuel system without the drawback of leaving undesirable residues on their pot.

Easy Switching Between Fuel Modes: The Converter Stove offers a user-friendly experience by allowing easy switching between alcohol and fuel tab/gel burning modes. Users can simply flip the stove over to switch between these modes, providing flexibility in choosing the most suitable fuel for a particular situation. This adaptability is especially valuable in different outdoor environments and weather conditions.

Compact and Portable Design: With a fold-flat stand and a convenient carrying case, the Converter Stove not only enhances the performance of the Hexagon Wood Stove but also ensures ease of transportation. The compact design makes it suitable for backpacking, camping, and other outdoor activities where space and weight considerations are crucial.

In summary, the Converter Stove adds fuel versatility, optimal cooking efficiency, and a cleaner cooking experience to the Hexagon Wood Stove or as a stand-alone stove, making it a more versatile and user-friendly outdoor cooking solution.

The Converter Stove is designed to be both an alcohol and fuel tab/gel burning stove. The process is straightforward by simply flipping the stove over. Here's a more detailed explanation:

Flip-Over Design: The Converter Stove has a clever design that enables users to switch between alcohol and fuel tab/gel burning modes by simply flipping the stove over. This feature allows for quick and easy adaptation to different fuel sources based on the user's preferences, fuel availability, or specific outdoor conditions.

Adjustable Configuration: The stove is engineered to work effectively in both configurations. Simply flipping the stove accommodates the chosen fuel type. This design ensures that users can easily transition between alcohol and fuel tab/gel modes without the need for complex adjustments or additional tools.

Versatility in Outdoor Cooking: The ability to seamlessly switch between alcohol and fuel tab/gel burning modes adds a layer of versatility to the Converter Stove. Users can choose the most suitable fuel based on factors such as fuel availability, burn time, or specific cooking needs, making it adaptable to various outdoor scenarios.
